Kid
Wave signed by Heavenly Recordings record label for it first EP Goom (2014).
One year later, Wonderlust debut album was out with it interesting fresh and
personal pop. The band will play soon on She's The Fest SON Estrella Galicia en Les Naves de
Valencia (27, 28 & 29 november). We've
talked with Lea Emery, band leader, about her beginnings, the difficulties
and the future plans of the band.
Lea, you’re from Sweden – that has a very interesting music scene - but you’ve decided to move to London. What were the reasons? Why London?
London and England in
general has a great music scene. I worked in England one summer when I was 17
and always wanted to move away to a bigger place so London felt like a natural
step. London is like a constant rush of adrenaline. I find the city quite tiring
after some time, but its still the only place where I can see myself live right
now.
Moverse a otra ciudad…¿fue
difícil) / Moving to another city… Was it too hard?
Siempre he sido
Moving to a new place
without knowing anyone is always gonna be hard. It took me a couple of years to
feel at home. The first years were tough because I moved around a lot, didn’t
have many friends and were constantly looking for opportunities and trying to
survive. I was just gonna stay in London for one year, that’s what I told my
parents. I’ve always had a strong vision and I'm one of those people who push
themselves over the edge and back to make things happen, I wanted to do music
so badly so giving up was never an option. So the move itself wasn’t as hard as
the anxiety about letting myself down or having to give up.
¿Cuáles fueron los inicios
de Kid Wave? / How were the beginnings of Kid Wave?
Era demasiado ingenua para empezar algo. Kid
I was very naive to start
with. Kid Wave is my first proper go at music and writing myself and it’s
definitely been a learning curve. It took me about 2 years to figure things out
properly and get a band together. I was only 19 and had no experience from the
music industry at all so no wonder. One thing I’ve learnt is to not rush and
that things take time for a reason. When you’re ready you’ll know and it’ll all
fall into place naturally. When you look back on things you can see it all
happens naturally, but when you’re in the present its sometimes hard to see the
natural development of things.
"He aprendido que no
One thing I’ve learnt is
to not rush
and that things take time for a reason."
Y llegó la oportunidad de
firmar con Heavenly Recordings/ And then arrived the opportunity to
sign by Heavenly Recordings
¡Sí! Un sueño hecho
realidad.
Yeah! Dream come true.
They were the first label I sent my demos to. I actually had a listen to those
first demos the other day, they sound terrible! I recorded them on my own at
home on my laptop. I didn’t even use a vocal mic I just sang into the laptop mic.
It’s so slack its embarrassing. I’d never send something off that sounded like
that nowadays but it kind of proves that you don’t need a lot of money and high
end recordings to get a record deal, as long as the songs are there I guess.
¿Te habías sentido atraída
por la autoproducción? / Did you ever feel attract for DIY music
production?
Not really, it was
nothing I was aiming for I just had no choice to start with. I recorded all
demos on my own either at home or in a studio near my school.
In
some interviews, you have mention that you’re not influenced by 90’s
underground music (like Dinosaur Jr). ¿Which are Kid Wave’s influences?
Me inspiro en muchas y
diferentes cosas.
I’m inspired by a lot
of different things. Right now I’m listening to a lot of Swedish bands, stuff I
listened to as a teenager. I’m rediscovering a lot of music. Theres so much
good stuff coming out of that country, or at least 10 years ago it was. Im not
very up to date with the music scene there right now.
¿Qué historia hay detrás de
vuestro debut Wonderlust? / Which story is behind your
debut album Wonderlust?
No
querer irme a otra ciudad.
I think Wonderlust was something
I had to get out of my
system."
Wonderlust is a
collection of songs that I wrote after moving to England. Some of the songs are
a couple of years old, some are pretty new. But they’ve all got that vibe of
wanting and longing for something else, I think thats why a lot of people think
its a bit dreamy. Now that I look back on it with a bit of distance I more and
more see its a quite dark and sad record - its so full of escapism - the whole
album is pretty much about how I want to get away from reality. I grew up
suffering from an anxiety disorder and my dreams became my only breathing space
so I would cling on to them like crazy. In my late teens one of my close family
members fell ill and home became a place I associated with pain and anxiety,
that’s nothing I’m proud of but I think it contributed to me wanting to move
away. When you’re a child or a teenager you’re not in charge of your own life
like I am now and I think in a way you either have to face your fears or escape
from them. Theres nothing romantic about mental illness, I’m a lot more present
and more at peace now than I’ve been the last 10 years so I realise how much I
relied on my dreams to make me happy and how much they mean to me, for better
or for worse.
The songs I write now are
on more varied subjects than before and I’m trying to figure out what’s
important to me besides music. I think Wonderlust was something I had to get
out of my system and I look back on it and see its a reflection of some of the
darkness and anxiety I experienced growing up.
¿Qué esperas del próximo
año?/ What do you expect from 2016?
¡Acabar de escribir y
grabar el nuevo álbum! Y con suerte publicarlo. ¡Y luego girar más!
Finishing writing and
recording the new album! Hopefully releasing it. Then hopefully more touring!
The Fest, Valencia).
You’re going to play soon on a music festival that
emphasizes the women’s role in the music scene (She’s The Fest,
Valencia). Do you think that women have something special to do in the
music industry?
¡Por supuesto! Siempre he
Of course! I think anyone
who’s got something to say has something to do. I don’t necessarily think it
comes down to if you’re a man or a woman, but I do think that equality anywhere
is very important and that its a very important discussion.
Nos encantaría veros tocar
en otras ciudades españolas. ¿Puede que pronto? / We will be happy to
see you playing in other spanish cities. Maybe soon?
Yes hopefully! We’d
love to tour in Spain and play in other cities as well!
¿Tocar o componer? / Play
or compose?
¡Ambos!
Both!
Vuestro mejor directo
/ Your best show
especial.
A highlight for me was
playing in Paris this year. We supported The Vaccines and played in the most
beautiful venue called La Cigale. It was our first show in France and the crowd
was amazing. My guitar amp didn’t work for the entire show so I was almost in
tears when I got off stage but looking back there was really something special
about that show and crowd.
