Entrevistamos a: IS TROPICAL

IS TROPICAL empiezan el año con buen pie. Después de pasar una mala racha, no se han rendido y han hecho lo que han querido. Habréis visto que durante estos últimos meses han ido lanzando varios singles (Pt.1, Pt.2, Pt.3 y Pt.4) bajo el mismo nombre ‘Black Anything’. Ahora el próximo paso es publicar su tercer álbum de estudio que unirá todos estos singles ya publicados junto a otras canciones inéditas. Hablamos con la banda británica sobre qué ha significado este nuevo e interesante proyecto y qué es lo que ha cambiado en su forma de hacer.

¿Cómo surgió la idea de grabar y publicar ‘Black Anything’ por entregas? /How did the idea of record ‘Black Anything’ in instalments born?

Desde la publicación de nuestro anterior álbum ya empezaron a surgir un montón de ideas para nuevas canciones. Experimentábamos en las pruebas de sonido de la gira y componíamos en los hoteles y aviones. Llegamos al punto de creer que teníamos suficientes ideas para hacer un nuevo disco. Pero lo que no había era tiempo. Así que como estábamos inmersos en una gira que nos llevaba por todo el globo, pensamos que sería una buena idea aprovecharla, visitando nuevos lugares que nos inspiraran y que influenciaran en el proceso de creación de ‘Black Anything’.

Since our previous album we had started to amass lots of new song ideas, we had been messing around in sound checks whilst on tour, writing in hotels and on planes. It got to the point where we felt he had enough ideas to make a fully formed record. The one thing we didn't have was time. We were on a hectic touring schedule that spanned the entire globe, so we thought it would be a great idea to capitalise on visiting all these amazing and inspiring locations and allow them to influence the making of Black Anything.

¿Los singles (Pt.1, Pt.2, Pt.3 y Pt.4) conviven entre ellos? / Do your singles (Pt.1, Pt.2, Pt.3 and Pt.4) live together?

Aunque el álbum está compuesto y grabado en diferentes momentos existe una coherencia y consistencia. Creo que el hecho de haber publicado antes dos álbumes y dos EPs te permite saber si algo funcionará o si no. Además, sentíamos tener suficiente experiencia para hacer un álbum bajo nuestras parámetros y sin la comodidad de un estudio de grabación base.

Although the 5 parts are recorded and written at different times, there's definitely a consistency and coherence to the record. I think having made 2 albums and an EP previously it allows you to know what works and what doesn't. We felt experienced enough to make this album happen under our own guidance without the comfort of a studio to base ourselves.

Habéis grabado en Norteamérica, Sudamérica, Europa, Asia y África. 5 continentes muy diferentes y quizás 5 maneras distintas de hacer las cosas…. ¿Fue difícil? / You’ve recorded in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. 5 different continents and maybe 5 different ways of doing things…was it hard?

Al principio creíamos que de esta forma, yendo a todos estos lugares gracias a nuestra gira, el proceso de grabación iba a ser más fácil. Pero grabar con suficiente buena calidad y con la energía necesaria en lugares tan dispares se hizo extremadamente complicado. El tiempo volaba… Era estresante pero a la vez muy liberador. Hemos conseguido que las canciones tengan distintas energías, lo que seguramente no hubiéramos conseguido de otra manera.

Initially we though the recording process would be easier this way, as we were going to be in all these locations anyway due to our live schedule, but in actuality the logistics of making recording that are of good enough quality and energy work in these far flung places was extremely difficult. It was time consuming and stressful, but at the same time very liberating. The songs have a different kind of energy that i don't think we would have been able to achieve in a studio.

¿Qué lugar os sorprendió más? / Which place did surprise you more?

Ya habíamos visitado todos estos países antes de la grabación de ‘Black Anything’ pero lo que más me sorprendió fue como todo lo que nos encontrábamos a nuestro alrededor se ha filtrado sin intención alguna en nuestro disco.

We had already been to all of the continents prior to recording Black Anything, but what surprised me was how unintentionally our surroundings actually seeped into the record.

Después de haber vivido malos tiempos, podemos decir que sois todo un ejemplo de autosuperación. ¿Es Black Anything algo más que un álbum? ¿Simboliza un viaje físico y emocional? / After lived through some bad times, you’re a great example of self-improvement. Is Black Anything more than an album? Does it symbolize a physical and emotional journey?

Es extraño porque hasta que no miras hacia atrás no te das cuenta por todo lo que has pasado. Hemos tenido numerosos managers, nuestras cuentas bancarias vacías y un montón de cosas que a nadie desearía, pero cuando pasas por todo esto hace que las cosas merezcan la pena. ‘Black Anything’ es un proyecto que nos ha permitido hacer las cosas de la manera que queríamos, adaptándolo a nuestro calendario y a nuestra economía. Hasta hemos creado todos los vídeos y los artworks nosotros mismos. Así que ahí va nuestro lema: todo es posible si haces lo que tienes que hacer y no escuchas a toda esa gente negativa que puede estar a tu alrededor.

It's weird because until you take a step back you don't realise the extent of what you've done or been through. We've had numerous managers, had our bank accounts emptied and a load of other stuff that you'd never want to happen, but when you come out the other side it just makes it all more worthwhile. Black Anything is a project that allowed us to do things the way we wanted, the way it suited our schedule, both financially and time wise. We created all the videos and artwork ourselves. This is our statement that anything is possible if you just do it and don't listen to negative people around you.

Creo que cuando haces un disco como éste te llevas algo más que un buen puñado de canciones. / I think when you make a record like this you take away more from it that just a bunch of songs.

Diferentes lugares y culturas os han inspirado para crear este nuevo álbum. ¿Algo más? / Different places and cultures have inspired you to create this new album. Anything else?

Creo que cuando haces un disco como éste te llevas algo más que un buen puñado de canciones. Cada single está ligado a unos recuerdos o a unas historias. ‘Black Anything’ nos ha hecho querer viajar más como banda y tocar en países que otros grupos no han visitado. Nos ha abierto los ojos a otras culturas y a otros puntos de vista distintos y nos ha permitido socializar con personas muy diferentes.

I think when you make a record like this you take away more from it that just a bunch of songs. Every single part of it is associated with a memory or a story that shaped by the interesting surrounding. It's made us want to travel more as a band, play countries that other bands don't visit. It opens your eyes to different cultures, viewpoints, and allows you to socialise with more diverse people.

¿Hay algo que haya cambiado en vuestro proceso creativo con respecto a vuestros anteriores álbumes? / Is there something that had changed your creative process regarding your last albums?

En términos de inspiración y composición hemos trabajado siempre de forma muy similar. Si antes cogíamos todas nuestras ideas y las metíamos en un cubo (el estudio) para darles un sentido, ahora hemos cogido las cosas directamente de donde han surgido. Y eso hace que el álbum en su conjunto sea más honesto y espontáneo.

We had always worked in a similar way in terms of writing and inspiration. In the past we would bring those ideas back to a central hub (the studio) and try to make sense of them. The way we made this album allowed us to directly get things down there and then, making it an altogether more spontaneous and honest record.

¿Qué esperáis del 2016? / What do you expect from 2016?

Nos vamos a América a hacer varios conciertos con motivo del lanzamiento de nuestro nuevo disco para el próximo 11 de marzo. Luego tenemos la gira europea y justo después temporada de festivales. Al final del verano estamos planeando hacer una gira mundial más extensa.

We're heading to America to play some shows around the release of the album on March 11th, then we have a European tour lined up. Straight after that we are hitting the festival season hard again. At the end of the summer we're planning on doing a more extensive tour of the world.
